Understanding Insomnia Part 2

CBT-I is aimed at the perpetuating factors driving chronic insomnia. There are five components:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
1️⃣ Sleep hygiene⁣⁣
2️⃣ Sleep restriction⁣⁣
3️⃣ Stimulus control therapy⁣⁣
4️⃣ Relaxation ⁣⁣
5️⃣ Cognitive therapy⁣⁣
I like to add a 6th component because it is so important to communicate the “why.”
6️⃣ Sleep education ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In the next few posts, I’ll review these components in more detail simulating a CBT-I protocol. Of course, here on insta it will be for informational purposes only and won’t necessarily apply to you since every case is different. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I always tailor my CBT-I sessions to meet the individual needs of my patients. In some cases sleep restriction is not needed, in other stimulus control is needed most. It really depends on each case. However, there are some concepts that are scientific and based on how our biology works and those concepts are the same for all patients. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
After I determine that CBT-I is the right treatment for my patient, I ask them to keep sleep diaries and provide them a reading assignment to learn more about sleep. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Stay tuned for the next steps in a CBT-I protocol.⁣⁣
